OBIYTC, West Nile, Allen Stadium, and the Start of School

OBIYTC
The beginning of school is always an exciting time.  Last week, we had a fantastic Athletic parent open house with Dr. Greg Dale.  Thank you to all of the parents who turned out to meet the Dragon coaches and listen to Dr. Dale.  Last Friday morning, I presented to our CISD coaches.  We celebrated last year's Lone Star Cup win and talked about how we continue the phenomonal success.  Our motto this year among our coaching staff is OBIYTC.  Despite a record setting 5 State Championships and the Lone Star Cup win last year, we believe that as a whole athletic department we have not reached our defining moment and that Our Best Is Yet To Come. It is my hope that our athletes adopt the attitude that despite how successful they were in their last game, last play, or last season that their Best is Yet To Come.  The thought that we have the potential to improve and to have another record setting year is so exciting to our coaches and I.

Dr. Dale also spent some time with with our coaches on Friday and needless to say our staff and I are ready for a great year. I want to brag on our coaching staff for a moment and tell you that in my opinion our 7th-12th grade coaching staff is the best in the nation.  Our coaches do a great job as classroom teachers. They are all CPR, First-Aid, AED, Concussion trained and spend a great deal of time learning new strategies and techniques to coach their sport.  Please thank you child's coach the next time you see them.

West Nile Virus:
We have had some inquires about how the Athletic Department will be dealing with WNV.  Below is CISD's current plan of action for WNV:

The City of Southlake will be holding a special meeting Monday evening, August 27, to discuss the possibility of aerial spraying for mosquitos. This is in response to Denton County’s decision to spray to help prevent the spread of West Nile Virus. A portion of the City of Southlake is in Denton County. To date, Southlake has had six cases of West Nile Virus, all affecting individuals who are elderly or have pre-existing conditions or weakened immune systems. The City has a story posted to MySouthlakeNews.com and is working jointly with Carroll ISD to help educate the public.

• Remember to use wipes or spray your children with approved DEET mosquito repellants before they go out to bus stops and/or outdoors.
• While wearing long sleeves and pants to school may not be practical in August/September, parents are encouraged to protect students during after school activities and from dusk to dawn as necessary.
• CISD prefer students use DEET wipes, however, parents may send additional wipes or non-aerosol sprays to the nurse’s office with instructions to reapply repellant to students before after-school or outdoor activities.
At this point, CISD will not alter outdoor activities or evening events because risks are minimal if personal protections are in place.
• The district is treating CISD property with briquettes from the city staff, but the district will not be handing supplies of DEET out to students.
• We are minimizing standing water where mosquitos might gather and will work cooperatively with the city to wipe down playground equipment should aerial spraying be approved.
Secondary students may bring repellant wipes or non-aerosol sprays from home in their gym bags for evening competitions and outdoor events, but parents are asked not to give the repellant to younger children to spray themselves. This will help protect those students who are asthmatic and could react negatively to extensive sprays in the learning classroom.
